Armed Forces Day is on the third Saturday of May; in 2018, it falls on May 19th. In 1949, this day was created to replace separate Army, Navy, Marine Corps, and Air Force Days. This single day for all Armed Forces stemmed from the unification of the branches under the Department of Defense. The first official Armed Forces Day took place on May 20th, 1950. Since then this day has often been celebrated with parades and receptions aimed at highlighting and honoring the United States military and its strength.
