See Something, Say Something

Aug 16, 2018

August is antiterrorism awareness month. This month is designed to raise awareness, not only of threats of terrorism, but also encourage regular vigilance and communication to report potential threats. If you see something, say something. Report suspicious activity, strange packages or strange behaviors to your local authority. Many terrorist plots have been thwarted due to vigilant citizens.

United States of America Department of Defense SealAugust 10th is the U.S Department of Defense’s Birthday. For 69 years, the Department of Defense has been coordinating and supervising all agencies and functions of the government concerned directly with national security and the United States Armed Forces. The Department of Defense is led by the Secretary of Defense, currently Jim Mattis, who reports directly to the President. Below the Secretary of Defense are the three main branches of military in the United States, the Army, Navy, and Air Force, as well as fifteen intelligence agencies. The Department of Defense is the largest employer in the world with over 1.3 million active duty service men and women.

Purple Heart BadgeAugust 7th is national Purple Heart Day. The Purple Heart is awarded to those who are wounded or killed while serving with the United States military. It is the oldest military award still given to U.S. military members. The original Purple Heart was the Badge of Military Merit established by George Washington. The award was only given during the Revolutionary War, and was not proposed again officially until after World War I. The Purple Heart differs from other decorations in that an individual is not recommended for the decoration, but rather he or she is entitled to it upon meeting specific criteria. To date, nearly 1.8 million Purple Hearts have been awarded to service members across all United States military branches.
