Happy Veterans Day!

Nov 10, 2018

Remember our Veterans: Soldier salute to US FlagNovember 11th marks Veterans Day here in the United States. This is a day honoring military veterans who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces. This day coincides with holidays celebrated in other countries, including Armistice Day and Remembrance Day. These holidays mark the anniversary of the end of World War I. The war ended with an armistice on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month back in 1918. This year marks the 100th anniversary of the armistice that ended the war between the Allied Powers and Germany.

The United States switched the holiday, formerly known as Armistice Day, to Veterans Day back in 1947. The name was switched in order to honor all those who have served, rather than only those who served during the first World War. On this dedicated holiday, if you know someone who has served in the U.S. Army, Air Force, Navy, Marines, Coast Guard, or National Guard, make a point to thank them for their service.

Happy Birthday MarinesThe day before Veterans Day is the United States Marine Corps birthday. The Marine Corps was founded on November 10th, 1775 by the Continental Congress. Nowadays, the Marine Corps celebrates its’ birthday with a ball and cake-cutting ceremony in Washington D.C. The United States Marine Corps (USMC) has served in every war since the founding of the United States back in 1776. Although the USMC falls under the administration of the Department of the Navy, they are their own branch of U.S. military. Happy Birthday Marine Corps!

Thanksgiving falls on the fourth Thursday of every November. This Thanksgiving, remember to be extra thankful for all those who have served, or are currently serving, in our nation’s military. With the end of the year bringing about a season of giving, don’t forget to give back to those who give so much for our freedom. While you are buying gifts for family and friends this year, remember not everyone gets to be home for the holidays. Think about donating your time, putting together care packages of food stuffs and home goods for those that have been deployed during the holidays, or make a donation to one of The Patriots Initiatives’ many Directory organizations focused on helping our military, veterans, and their families.
