Answering The Call

Sep 10, 2018

Last October, The Patriots Initiative’s team ‘Young Guns’ hiked from the North Rim of the Grand Canyon to the South Rim, a 25 mile, 6500’ elevation loss and 5500’ elevation gain, all in one day to raise money for TPI’s Directory. They were able to raise more than $60,000 to help support organizations focused on our wounded and fallen, and transitioning veterans. The Patriots Initiative then used this money to award grants to several of TPI’s fully accredited Directory organizations.

One such organization, Folds of Honor, received a $5,000 grant to help fully fund a scholarship for a dependent of America’s fallen and disabled service members. Below is an exert thanking TPI and its generous donors.

Multiple hands on folded U.S. flag“While it is impossible to fully express our gratitude to The Patriots Initiative, we want to start with a simple thank you.

Thank you, patriot, for standing with us. Your support returns a life-changing difference in the families who’ve paid the ultimate price of freedom.

Every time one more scholarship is awarded, progress is made. Every time one more dollar is raised, progress is made. Every time one more family knows that their sacrifices and the sacrifices of their service member are not and will not be forgotten, progress is made.

Because of you, much progress has been made. Your gift of $5,000 in 2017 represents much more than a simple donation. Your gift is a statement to all the families we support that they don’t have to bear the weight of their sacrifice alone.”

Since their founding in 2007, Folds of Honor has awarded nearly 16,000 educational scholarships. In 2017 alone, 3,509 scholarships were awarded.

Two veterans with K9s for Warriors programThis month is National Service Dog Awareness Month, designed to raise awareness and show appreciation for the extraordinary work service animals do each and every day for the people in their care. The Patriots Initiative’s Directory lists several veteran service dog programs striving to help the lives of our service members and their families. One such program is K9s For Warriors, which works to save two lives at a time—the veteran’s and the dog’s. K9s For Warriors pairs rescue dogs that have been trained as service animals with traumatized soldiers. The dogs are specifically trained to deal with symptoms of Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), traumatic brain injury, or military sexual trauma. To date, K9s For Warriors has rescued more than 850 dogs and 440 military service members with an astounding 99% program success rate.

K9s For Warriors recently partnered with Purdue University College of Veterinary Medicine on a pilot study testing the effectiveness of service dogs as a complementary treatment for military members and veterans who suffer from PTSD. Key findings included a significant reduction in suicidal thoughts, required medication, night terrors, and an increase of three to four hours of sleep per night.
